Zulu BasketsZulu Baskets
Fair Trade, Ethical and made entirely from natural materials, Injabulo bring you a stunning range of traditional Zulu baskets from South Africa.
Zulu women work in their homes, where they can assimilate basket making into their normal routine to supplement, and in many cases, generate their only means of income.
Every basket is made by hand, using indigenous raw materials and is coloured using natural dyes obtained from bark, berries and roots.
Injabulo are proud to be working with their supplier who was concerned with the devastation that AIDS is having on rural communities. Concerned that these communities were dying out and their age old skills with them, he set about making a difference and has regenerated 3 villages through his efforts and introduced a much needed source of income which will help pay for education and nutrition for future generations.
Sipho's WireworkSipho's Wirework
Sipho works from Project Gateway, a Church organisation in Pietermaritzburg, Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. Here, this elderly gentleman has been given the opportunity to learn a skill, earn a decent living and live with dignity.
We thank you on Sipho's behalf for supporting him.
WallhangingsWallhangings
A range of limited edition hand painted fully washable wallhangings. The hangings are slotted top and bottom and can be hung using a bamboo pole, curtain pole, dowelling or whatever suits your decor.
These wall hangings have all been hand painted in South Africa by people who are being given a chance to learn a skill or develop their own enterprise. The people who have painted these wall hangings have had no education and prior to coming to the organisation had no knowledge of scissors or rulers and didn't know colours as we do. When asked to paint "blue" they wouldn't be able to pick out the colour - when asked to paint the colour of the sky, they would pick out the colour blue. These people have now been empowered and uplifted and have been given the opportunity to earn a decent wage and change their impoverished lifestyles.
Some wall hangings are made using a technique called " flour resist". Here a paste is made from flour and water and used to draw the initial design. This is left to dry and forms a crust. The rest of the design is painted and when everything is dry the "crust" is knocked off leaving a white "watermark" line.
After painting the hanging is " baked" in the oven to set the design.
