Tonga Baskets
Gorgeous baskets in natural shades of brown and cream.
These lightweight baskets are all totally unique - no two pattersn are alike.
They make a fabulous wall decoration in a group or used as a serving bowl will enhance any table.

Telephone Wire Baskets
The origins of telephone wire is traced to Zulu night watchmen in urban areas who - to banish loneliness and boredom on night shifts took to weaving colored wire around their traditional sticks. Soon this technique was adapted to making - izimbenge- beer pot covers - the wire plates we have today. Today this craft has developed hugely in creativity and diversity of uses
The fine, even texture and colors of telephone wire are used in these baskets to produce an intricate, swirling design. The techniques and aesthetic of traditional grass basket-weaving have been beautifully adapted by contemporary Zulu artisans to this readly available scrap.

Beer baskets
Traditionally these baskets are used to store the home brew beer made by the Zulus. They are woven in such a way that when the weave gets wet it expands and becomes watertight.
The different patterns all have a meaning in Zulu culture and each basket has a small information tag detailing this and showing the name of the weaver.

Herb Baskets
The Zulus are the largest tribe in Africa and still believe very much in the "Sangoma" (witchdoctor).
Herbs are used for medicinal purposes and are stored in these delightful baskets.
